Moving offices? Plan the network before the desks.
A practical checklist for getting your new space connected, without leaving the cabling until the last minute.
Start with the floor plan
Mark the spaces people will actually use: desks, meeting rooms, reception, printers and point-of-sale areas. Include cameras and Wi-Fi access points, not just computers. A simple annotated plan is a useful starting point, even if the furniture layout is still changing.
Count connections, not people
One person may use several connected devices, while some equipment is shared. Make an equipment list by location and note anything that needs a wired connection. Flag planned additions so the installer can discuss spare capacity without guessing.
Give the cabinet a proper home
Your network equipment needs a suitable location, power and accessible cable routes. Discuss cabinet size, access and the surrounding environment before furniture or finishes make the choice difficult. Make sure the people who maintain the equipment can reach it.
Coordinate access and installation
Ceiling access, building rules and work by other contractors can change the installation sequence. Share the move date and any restrictions early. Decide when existing services can be disconnected and how the new connections will be checked before staff arrive.
Agree what handover includes
Ask for clear identification of connection points and agree the testing and documentation included in the quote. Keep the network layout somewhere the next person can find it. A tidy cabinet is useful; a tidy cabinet with understandable labels is better.
